Garden Warbler (Sylvia borin ) Havesanger ~ Curruca Mosquitera ~ Trädgårdssångare 2025-05-20 Amager Fælled, Denmark Strandeng-midt. A strange-singing bird. Very fast raspy notes with a few more melodious tones at the end. It sang in-between Eurasian Blackcaps, and didn't sound like any of the common species I know in Denmark, why I suspected a rare bird. It only sang occassionally, but always the same short sequence starting with the fast raspy notes and then ending with a few melodious ones. I stayed there for more that two hours and the bird only sang like this - never the long continous warble that the species is known for. It was very difficult to spot as it was moving around within a dense thicket, but when it finally came out, I was lucky to get these photos. My first thought was of a Booted Warbler. Pale grayish, rounded head, and the song seemed to match well with that bird. I've only seen one bird in India 20 years ago, but have no recollection of the experience at all. So my experience with that species was almost zero and with my birding interest slowly being replaced by my interest in dragonflies, I don't keep up with details on rare and potential species any more. All I remembered was, that Booted was split into two species and that was partially based on different habitat preferences. The split-off species Syke's Wabler was a steppe bird, and I couldn't remember what caligata, the continuing Booted Warbler had as habitat preference. So I locked on to thrilling idea of having found a good rarity. Finally. Only that it has never slipped my mind that I made a major mistake a few years ago, and called out a Radde's Warbler that turned out to be a Reed Warbler. It was tempting not to report anything this time, and just enjoy my find alone. But of course that's a childish idea that doesn't make sense if you're a moral person with the integrity intact. So I had to risk to expose my lack of abilities to keep at the forefront of identification skills. I called TEO. I told him about the bird and sent him the photos as a mobile version. He promised to swing around in short time. Sharper and with more experience, however, he didn't sound too optimistic after having seen the photos. But the quality wasn't good, so he still decided to come. The bird had stopped singing for a while, but when he arrived it started again, and Troels agreed that it was a funny sound. But all taking into consideration he was mostly in favor of a Garden Warbler singing an unusual song. Habitat, looks and behavior were all in favor of this species. A Booted would be smaller and prefers a more open environment, and in all the song, as we listened to different recordings, should be more consequent on the nasal raspy side, without the melodious notes. Troels left, while I stayed back to digest my disappointment. Though, I told him I would try to get better evidence, because the photos are not good enough to really determine the species. But I only stayed a few minutes, knowing that it could only be this: an aberrant Garden Warbler after all. It all made sense. And afterwards, listening to more Garden Warbler songs on xeno-canto a few included similar raspy sequences, and when listening close to normal songs it is not difficult to hear that some of the single notes consequently are raspy. A defect bird, or a young bird that perhaps never learned to sing well. Or perhaps it wintered close to another bird that inspired it. The rythm and pace of the song did make me think of a Sedge Warbler. Both species winter south of the Sahara... Also: Common Cuckoo, Common Chiffchaff, Eurasian Blackcap, Hooded Crow, Edible Frog, humans, camera shutter Aberrant |

Western Bonelli's Warbler (Phylloscopus bonelli ) Bjergløvsanger ~ Bergsångare 2025-05-09 Jægersborg Dyrehave, Denmark Male. Ulvedalene. Found by Stefan Andersen today. I was there 1430-1530. 55 kilometers on bike. Very active, singing constantly and moving between trees around a clearing. Conifers, Beech and Oak. Was constantly 15 meters up or more while I was there, but judging from the many photos of the bird, it also came lower down at other times. With some good will it is possible to sense the greenish edges to the remiges which in all points toward this species and not the Eastern counterpart, P. orientalis, which in general is duller and browner in plumage. The songs apparently can be very similar, but the calls are different, and some claim to have heard the call that belong to a Western. All fine with me, and a new DK species. As can be seen in the spectrogram the bird delivered two different trills. The one starting at sec 27 starts out at a higher frequency falling slightly toward the end. The one at sec 35 is more level and delivered at a slower pace. All the songs similar to sec-27 contain 11 or 12 notes in this sample, whereas the types similar to sec-35 only contains 9 tones, all of them. And they seem to be used in turns consequently, why there might be a more elaborate song pattern in play. Also: Great Tit, Common Chaffinch. Rare |

Singing and foraging (in a flowering Mirabelle). It seems as if this spot is turning into a classic for the species. Finn saw one earlier here some days ago. Moving to new parts of the golf course as the grass becomes too short. Here at the lake in front of the club house. Without any rain for a long time now, and combined with the chilly weather, the grass doesn't grow much. Last reported on March 20. |

Red-breasted Goose (Branta ruficollis ) Same bird: 205 Rødhalset Gås ~ Barnacla Cuellirroja ~ Rödhalsad Gås 2025-03-14 Kalvebod Fælled, Denmark Adult. Male. Royal Golf Club. Still present and now in company of a bird number two [likely the bird reported from Ishøj a few days ago]. However, when I was there the two birds didn't seem to interact at all, even though they were foraging few meters from each other. The other one is thought to be a female because of the smaller size, but I'm not sure. I would rather speculate and like both of them to be males, explaining why they preferred to forage exclusively. The birds were pushed around a lot today, and the male first coming in with the swimming group, and later the last half of the group came in, and then the two birds were foraging together. But only shortly because they were chased away by a considerate golfer, who didn't think enough of his own abilities to over-shoot the flock. |

Red-breasted Goose (Branta ruficollis ) Rødhalset Gås ~ Barnacla Cuellirroja ~ Rödhalsad Gås 2025-03-14 Kalvebod Fælled, Denmark Adult. Royal Golf Club. A second bird has shown up. Probably the bird from Ishøj that was reported a few days ago. It appears to be smaller why it would be fair to call it a female, but I'm leaving it without sex, and this mainly because I don't think it looks much smaller than the barnacles, but also the fact that there seemed to be no interaction the two birds between [at least when I saw them], which I would have expected from northbound singletons of the opposite sex, walking 10 meters from each other. Apparently the group of barnacles they hang out with has deminished in number, why I expect they have continued their journey toward the breeding grounds, perhaps leaving only the northernmost breeders behind. In photo 6 the male is the one to the left, typically upright and alert...ready to push the others around. |

Black Guillemot (Cepphus grylle mandtii) Tejst ~ Arao Aliblanco ~ Tobisgrissla 2025-03-14 Rungsted Havn, Denmark Adult. In our part of the world this high arctic subspecies, mandtii, is rare to find south of northern Norway (nearest breeding ground is Svalbard). It is circumpolar and is replaced toward the south by the subspecies also found in Denmark, arcticus. There are 3 other very local European subspecies, showing subtle differences from arcticus. The variation between these two groups is clinal from south to north, where northern birds in general show more white in the plumage than the southern birds do. Also bill length varies, with shorter bills in the north. This bird is a mandtii because:
It's an adult partly because the white wing oval is purely colored without traces of black lines down the middle. The bird has been present for several days, and apparently feels at home here [it was first found at Vedbæk Havn 4 km to the south]. It didn't seem to worry much about the attention it got, and it calmly patroled the perimeter of the harbor basin at a leisurely pace to forage here and there. I was there for an hour, and during that period it only lifted the wings once, which I was lucky to capture, even though it would have been better from an id perspective with a clear view of the entire upper side, wings spread. Rare |

Red-breasted Goose (Branta ruficollis ) Same bird: 205 Rødhalset Gås ~ Barnacla Cuellirroja ~ Rödhalsad Gås 2025-03-13 Kalvebod Fælled, Denmark Adult. Male. Royal Golf Club. Hoping to get closer photos today, starting to look for it on Amager Fælled. All the barnacles were but this one not. I drove to the golf course and found it in a small flock of barnacles, but in that same moment two golfers approached and flushed the birds. Luckily I had just pulled my camera out of the bag, ready to walk, when the birds took flight, so when they came right toward me, I just had to shoot. No time to adjust settings of course, and with overcast dark weather the result is accordingly. But still my first decent flight shots of the species, why I'm ok satisfied. Thought it looked like it flew to Amager Fælled, I couldn't find it there when I went back, but it was reported later in the afternoon again. Must be a really good type of grass! |

Red-breasted Goose (Branta ruficollis ) Same bird: 205 Rødhalset Gås ~ Barnacla Cuellirroja ~ Rödhalsad Gås 2025-03-11 Amager Fælled, Denmark Adult. Male. Boldbanerne. Some 500 meters from the golf club where it was found earlier, it is still here with 950 barnacle geese. Also the day after, the 12th, where it was seen both here and on the golf course during the day. My photos of today reveal that it is the same bird as the one I saw at Ishøj In February, both showing a unique border along the greater coverts. (Lars Paaby has concluded the same). People have started calling it a male, which I agree with. It does seem to match many of the barnacles in size, and even the biggest females are smaller than any barnacle. So. I wonder what the Municipality's Chief Gardener thinks about all the free natural fertilizer that the geese generously have gifted him with... |

Still present and apparently spent the night in the nearby lake. There was some disturbance with golfers walking all over the place. First photo was taken just as I was ready to take the first shot of the bird and a golfer decided to walk straight into the flock. Luckily the geese seem to like the spot a lot, so they didn't fly long and I got the distant photos. This was from within the course area, away from the public trails, so I didn't like to spend too much time there and accepted what I got. Even though the idea with todays visit was to get close enough photos to try to be able to determine if this bird is the same as the one from Ishøj. |

Red-breasted Goose (Branta ruficollis ) Same bird: 205 Rødhalset Gås ~ Barnacla Cuellirroja ~ Rödhalsad Gås 2025-03-09 Kalvebod Fælled, Denmark Adult. Male. Royal Golf Club. Found foraging by someone else in the afternoon with a large flock of Barnacle Geese on the golf course. I twitched it in the absolutely last light of the day. Shot at t160,f5.6,i6400 there was nothing more to do with my outdated 7D markII. Photo 2 is what it looked like out of the camera. The edited photo looks like a painting, but I kinda like it, so I'm not going to invest more time trying to make it look more natural. The bird was calling and behaved somewhat dominating, just like the bird at Ishøj earlier this year, and hearing it calling, it sounded familiar, and I wonder if it could be the same bird? The spectrogram shows the part with the call, but it is not distinct enough, blending in with the barnacle sounds. |
