Water Soldiers (Stratiotes aloides) (Plants) Krebseklo (dk) Vattenaloe (se) 2024-07-06 Krebseklo-vandhullet/kirkegård (Hørsholm), Denmark
Krebseklo-vandhullet. Ok, I took similar photos two years ago, but then you know: They are still here. The preferred plant for egg-incision of the Green Hawker (Aeshna viridis) [Grøn Mosaikguldsmed], but you can't just assume that all larger exuvias (the skin left behind by the emerging dragonfly) found on the plant are of the this species since other hawkers use them too, for example Migrant Hawker (Aeshna mixta) [Efterårsmosaikguldsmed] and Blue Hawker (Aeshna cyanea) [Blå Mosaikguldsmed]. The plant seems to be spreading, helped on its way by increasing horticultural activities. There is a pond in the nearby cemetery too where both Water Soldiers and the Green Hawker are present. |

Imago. ♂. Den våde eng ved krebseklo-vandhullet. A more well-marked individual of the four males seen here today. But just wondering if I might have photographed two different animals here, because the amount of yellow on the abdomen is very different the two sides between. There was heavy interaction at times and maybe I lost track of who was who. |

Imago. ♂. Den våde eng ved krebseklo-vandhullet. 4 males present, constantly patrolling each their territory, at times clashing in dispute, but most of the time just flying forth and back hoping for a well-shaped goodiebag to come by. An individual with very small yellow marks, making them difficult to perceive in flight, but the slender body and the patrolling behavior in open air are good indicators for this species. |

Imago. ♀. Den tørre eng over krebseklo-vandhullet. Some females are strongly colored and can be difficult to separate in flight, why I chased this one until it perched. The brownish cast to the dark parts on top of the abdomen is good for the female as is of course the shape of the appendages. |

Imago. ♂. Vandhullet uden krebseklo, kirkegården. Teneral. A freshly sprinkled teneral after a heavy shower. It sat like this when I arrived, and still in the same position 4 hours later when I left. It wasn't exactly cold and the sun came out, and as can be seen it had dried up during this period, but apparently still wasn't able to move. |

Imago. ♀. Fandens Hul. Young. Showing beautifully exactly why the damselflies have developed their eyes as they have. The bluish eye makes it a young and I think the straw colored underside of the abdomen always goes best with a female, and the thickening at the end must be the ovipositor bulging out. |

Sweet Flag (Acorus calamus) (Plants) Kalmus (dk) Cálamo Aromático (es) Kalmus (se) 2024-06-29 Amager Fælled, Denmark
A rather common plant in ponds in our area. It looks superficially like Water-soldier [Krebseklo] but emerges from the water in a single point and has longer leaves but without the thorny edges - has instead a wrinkled appearance in parts of the leaves. Should be emitting a pleasant fragrance, for which the plant has been used back to the Ancient Egyptians, but I haven't been able to confirm this yet. It probably has to come from the flowers, and since they often stand in water it is difficult to approach close enough. |

Blue-eyed Hawker (Aeshna affinis) (Dragonflies) Sydlig Mosaikguldsmed (dk) Esna Zafiro (es) Klarblå Mosaikslända (se) 2024-07-07 Kalvebod Fælled, Denmark
Imago. ♀. Bagstien, Pinseskoven. On July 1 I had two suspected females at this spot. They were flying around, but impossible to capture on photo, and finally disappeared. Today I spotted one again: smallish hawker with brown body and greenish toward the front part as seen in photo 1, and moving erratically and fast around about 4-5 meters above the ground. And then luckily it decided to perch, and luckily right in front of me - every time it flew with trees in the background I tended to loose sight of it. My eyes or just plain difficult in general. For the record I also had a suspected male in the same spot, brightly blue and smallish, but only seen briefly, and not again the following days. The wing marks are brown why I assume it to be a mature female. It perched vertically at first but then twisted the angle as seen in the last photos. Three meters above the ground. |

Imago. ♂. Heksegrydens indgang. JES. A common species rarely seen alive by me. The snail had nothing to do with the action, unless the earth worm was originally intended for it, because the shrew came in as the two were already close - sniffing its way to an easy meal. An extraordinary creature with almost no eyesight one must believe, allowing us to get very close. I guess it took some 5 minutes to consume the worm, and then after finishing up, it turned around leaving a popo and disappeared into the Hidden World of Mice..! |

Blue-eyed Hawker (Aeshna affinis) (Dragonflies) Sydlig Mosaikguldsmed (dk) Esna Zafiro (es) Klarblå Mosaikslända (se) 2024-06-29 Amager Fælled, Denmark
Imago. ♀. Strandengen Syd. Young. Not sure, but possibly flushed it from the small pond in photo 9, as I saw a large pale dragonfly flying quickly away, when I approached. And then later I flushed it again in between the thicket where it finally found this good hawthorn to hang from. A fresh teneral individual smells like a local animal. A few days ago I had another suspected female at the edge of Pinseskoven, Kalvebod Fælled, and two days later I saw two suspected females inside the forest along the good path for apatura butterflies, and finally on July 7 a confirmed one! The species transforms from egg to imago in a single season, why there is no problem suspecting these animals to be local, based on the massive presence in eastern Denmark the last two years. My first female on Amager, and my first teneral individual. |

Aeshna sp. (Aeshna sp.) (Dragonflies) 2024-06-27 Kalvebod Fælled, Denmark
Imago. ♀. Svenskeholmvej øst. Southern Hawker (A. affinis)[Sydlig Mosaikguldsmed] - Green Hawker (A. viridis) [Grøn Mosaikguldsmed] ? Flying in the open above the road on the border between the forest and open short-grassed fields. No water nearby. I didn't have time to nail it properly, hoping the photos would do the trick, but they are not good enough for me to id it positively. A female of course with two long appendages and the very visible ovipositor. There are a few markings on the side of the otherwise all green thorax and the proximal segments of the abdomen are very uniformly green, the others becoming more checkered toward the tip. This pattern is good for both Southern Hawker and Green Hawker. Southern would be early in Denmark even for this year and Green would be unexpected since it has never been seen on Amager. However, Hot weather today with southern winds could undoubtedly have provoked movements from the south, why I would like it best for an affinis; this also because the main flight period in NC Europe is very much ongoing. And Green being a NE European, and more selective, species it is probably less likely to wander like Southern does. [Lars Johansen mentions that he has experienced Green as a wanderer, especially females]. Both Blue Emperor [Stor Kejserguldsmed] and Blue Hawker [Blå Mosaikguldsmed] are excluded based on size, shapes or patterns - it didn't look big in flight. |
