Cackling Goose (Branta hutchinsii hutchinsii) Dværgcanadagås ~ Ganso Canadiense Menor ~ Dvärgkanadagås 2022-06-13 Kalvebod Fælled, Denmark Reservatvej. Origin unknown, but the species is increasing in numbers in North America, and it is expected that some individuals find their way across the Atlantic with other arctic geese. Assuming this subspecies based on the size similar to a Barnacle. The other subspecies that is encountered in Europe at times (escapees?) is minima which is the smallest of them all, and much darker in general. Hutchinsii has a small but still elongated bill compared to minima, the shape of the white cheek patch is often indented at the level of the eye on hutchinsii, which this bird shows and the body and breast color is paler than on minima too. The steepness of the forehead relative to the bill is larger than on the other similar-looking subspecies, taverneri which shows a more level line between bill and forehead. It is also normally larger. This birds shows an angle, and it also shows a flat top of the head which is good for hutchinsii too. According to BOW (Birds Of the World) less than 25 % of hutchinsii shows a complete gular stripe. Photo 4 shows a weak hint of such a stripe, but I'm not sure if it qualifies as complete, being rather diffuse. It came in yesterday with a few Barnacles. |
