Monotypic: Breeds Holarctic low Arctic tundra, locally high Arctic and subarctic, from western and southern Greenland, Iceland, northern Scotland, and Scandinavian coasts including Baltic Sea, Svalbard (north of Norway), northern Russia to northeastern Siberia and Kamchatka, Aleutian and Bering Sea islands, western and southwestern Alaska, Arctic Canada (except northern high Arctic islands) to Baffin Island and east-central Canada; winters to high-productivity subtropical to tropical coastal waters of southern continents, in coastal waters of Africa, Persian Gulf, eastern coast of Arabian Sea (western India and Sri Lanka), northern Indian Ocean, Australia, and New Zealand, Peru, Chile, and east-central Argentina. | |||
