Comment Subspecies specifics of juveniles: American, surinamensis, shows wing-breast spot broader but less well-defined edges, has a diffuse darkish flank and shows little contrast between tail and upper tail coverts and back. And also shows more contrast on dark head markings with the ear patches being darker than the crown. European birds, niger, often shows well-marked pale borders to upper tail coverts and scapulars.
