Monotypic: Breeds drier tundra from Yamal Peninsula to northwestern Chukotskiy Peninsula (northwestern to northeastern Siberia), including New Siberian Islands; winters southern Europe and Africa eastward through southern Asia to Taiwan and Philippines and southward to Melanesia; prone to extreme vagrancy.
