      Adult.
Banded with black text on white on right leg: 3LZ. Metal band on left leg.

Now with the cold the birds are highly sensitive to any movements indicating that food is about to be brought out. I found this out the other day when I took out a bread snack to eat myself. Instantly 50 gulls were surrounding me, and when testing them, they were happy to feed right from my hand. And their audacity kept growing, trying to snatch the remaining part of the bread out of my other hand and one even landed on my head to be well within reach of the next opportunity. Sneaky creatures!

      Adult. Male.
      Skt Jørgens sø N.

One of the more common aythya hybrids.

On this bird the head and breast mostly resemble the ferruginous duck apart from the orange iris and a rather broad dark band at the tip of the bill, but not as broad as on the pure pochard. From most angles the peaked top of the head is visible; also a ferruginous trait.

The underwing is difficult to judge from these photos but it looks intermediate between the two species as well, with subdued white and palish trail edge.

The gray flanks and belly plus the limited white lower rump are traces indicating that the pochard is involved. As does the rather long sloping bill.

Ferruginous Duck is a more compact bird than Common Pochard which is also the case with this bird compared to the pure pochards around it.

A female type bird apparently was present too, which I couldn't find. Will try another day when there is more light on the birds and they perhaps then will be more active. This bird was resting and hiding its bill in the plumage for almost an hour before it became fully visible.

I'm not sure if three different birds are involved here, because the two in the video show a strong bill color, whereas the bird in photo 4 shows a bird with a more subdued bill.

The bird was still present today, showing the same clear features indicating a hybrid. Today I was able to compare it with a coot, and it looked intermediate in size between the coot and the pure moorhens.

The overall behavior was more like that of the also present moorhens, sticking to the edge of the water, foraging in between stones and in grassy parts.

It acted confident and there were never signs of conflicts with other birds, as can often be seen when someone looks different.

Adult male. Have seen 5 males together, but no females, and the first and only other hummer to visit was and still is a Violet-crowned Hummingbird. See 2732, which is the same or one of the other 4 males. The area is isolated from natural habitat in general, making it harder to attract birds. Of course it is impossible to see details in this poor video, but you can still perceive that the tail moves a lot, like a large paint brush, and this behavior apparently is typical for the species, and is very different from the way the Violet-crowned moves its tail, making this an id feature even when you can't see the birds other than in silhouette

Adult male. The subspecies only based on the locality. This bird is sick. It's got what looks like a tumor on the side of the neck. It was obvious that something was wrong with it also before I got my binoculars on it. It was almost crawling over the grass and it was foraging in the sun, which they never do if they can avoid it. This it probably did to be warmed up after a chilly night. I stayed at the same position to watch it while it slowly moved forward along the sunny patch leading down toward me. First when it was half a meter from me, it looked up and found out that there could be danger in the air. But even then it only flew about 5 meters before it dropped down and started to forage again. A sad birthday experience for me, who had gone to the park to try to see if I could beat my record of 67 species in a day set on one of my previous birthdays.

Compared with the also present Red-necked Phalaropes it was clear that the W's were spinning considerably faster than the RN's. See video 2189. Dont' know it is species specific. Also notice that some birds are spinning against the clock and some with it. Not sure it it is coincidental or perhaps sex related...? Didn't observe that the same bird turned both ways around.

Basic plumage. Not sure if the spinning speed of the Red-necked generally is slower than that of the Wilson's, but it was clearly so comparing with the also present Wilson's. See video 2190. Snow geese sound in the background.

Male. Unmistakable in the area. 2 males seen together. Not sure if all pictures are of the same bird. Lifer! Funny to observe how it looks like the right outer tail feather is missing in photo 4, whereas it is very present in number 5.

Juvenile bird with finely scaled back and bright bill without black tip. Also rather brownish neck. A big surprise to find this lonely bird, and especially on a day without any waterfowl besides the locale ones. It foraged almost constantly during my stay, only staying above the surface for a longer period, as seen in the video, while it was preening. Incredible that a lake like this, with polluted water and large quantities of trash floating around, and in the middle of the city, could attract this elegant bird. Rather rare species in general to find inland in Mexico. My first in Jalisco.
