Rufous-chested Swallow (Cecropis semirufa gordoni) Rødbrystet Svale ~ Savannsvala 2024-05-10 Rørtang Overdrev (Snekkersten), Denmark New species for Denmark and Europe. Mikkel Høegh Post* Discovered the day before (also present May 11th). One of these incidents that you simply can't predict, why the wow-effect lies beyond comprehension. With this bird traveling far north of its destination, probably the Senegambian/Sahel region, anything can happen. It probably continued north with other swallows, as it was foraging here in a mixed flock with Barn Swallows and House-Martins. The paleness of the bird makes it likely that it belongs to the northern subspecies, indicated, and the brownish and worn remiges, contrasting with the darker mantel, indicate a 2cy bird. Short outer tailfeathers compared to the adult male, could go with either a female or a young male. Unfortunately the weather was overcast why it was extra difficult to get good photos, even though the bird behaved very accommodating, with continued foraging tours right above our heads. It was a larger and heavier bird in flight than the Barn Swallows - though that impression might have been emphasized by the darker underside. Rare |
