2012-05-10 Volcán Nevado de Colima, Mexico Subspecies: purpurascens Adult. A pair together. Flushed by us along the road as they were foraging on the forest floor. Retreated to the highest trees but this one reacted to playback for a while. Remarkable creation. The tail seemed enormous as they took flight from the bottom. Beautiful! |

2016-04-18 Las Joyas (Manantlán - jal), Mexico Subspecies: purpurascens Adult. Unmistakable if seen well. The chachalacas don't have so big throat flap, and has less red eye and less bare skin around the eye, and it is normally blackish, not bluish black as here. The white neck streaks are characteristic of the guan as well. Rather common in the area around the camp, and easier to get to see than the also present chachalacas. Best photos |
