Golden-fronted Woodpecker (Melanerpes aurifrons dubius) Bleg Spætte ~ Carpintero Cheje ~ Gulpannad Hackspett 2013-11-29 Reserva de la Biósfera Calakmul, Mexico
Adult female. Seen from a distance it looks like the nasal tufts are of a different color than the red nape. They could look yellowish, and therefore fool someone to believe that the bird is a Yucatan Woodpecker. But seen closer, see 1184, it is obvious that they are indeed soft red. The bird is probably also of too large proportions be a Yucatán Woodpecker. The extent of red on the head also fits a female Golden-fronted better. Female Yucatan only has a small patch on the lower nape, and the male has red almost reaching the front above the bill, like male of Golden-fronted. At closer range it is obvious that the nasal tufts are reddish and not yellowish, which excludes a Yucatan Woodpecker. |

Golden-fronted Woodpecker (Melanerpes aurifrons veraecrucis) Bleg Spætte ~ Carpintero Cheje ~ Gulpannad Hackspett 2016-01-10 Villahermosa (ciudad), Mexico
♂. Museo de La Venta. Male with complete red crown. Southeastern subspecies, like this one, don't have golden colors on the head. The fine white back streaks are also characteristic for these subspecies. Clean white rump is characteristic for the species. |
