Mexican Whip-poor-will (Antrostomus arizonae chiapensis?) Arizona Natravn ~ Tapacaminos Cuerporruín Mexicano ~ Västlig Skriknattskärra 2018-04-21 Camino a Tzontehuitz (chp), Mexico
Even though you can't see the bird that well here, it should be possible to perceive that the species is rather compact and dark compared to other nightjars. It is one of the most widespread ones in mountainous regions in Mexico. |

Mexican Whip-poor-will (Antrostomus arizonae arizonae) Arizona Natravn ~ Tapacaminos Cuerporruín Mexicano ~ Västlig Skriknattskärra 2019-02-01 Sierra de San Juan (nay), Mexico
Male with white tail corners. Dark bird with hint of buffy collar. Buff-collared would be lighter gray. Well spotted by client Bryan Nixon. |

Mexican Whip-poor-will (Antrostomus arizonae [?]) Arizona Natravn ~ Tapacaminos Cuerporruín Mexicano ~ Västlig Skriknattskärra 2020-01-05 Carretera Pánuco (sin), Mexico
Other than being a dark bird (good for the species), the very big white patches on the outer tail are fairly diagnostic in the area for the male of this species. The bird was calling too, confirming the identification. We had different flashlights pointed at it, hence the different light quality one photo to another. |
