Red Phalarope (Phalaropus fulicarius) monotypic Thorshane ~ Falaropo Pico Grueso ~ Brednäbbad Simsnäppa 2010-11-15 Bahía de San Quintín (bcn), Mexico
1cy bird with dark tertials (the long feathers looking like primaries). The only bird present of the species. Came from the water and landed right next to me on the beach. Seen inside the lagoon. There is much variation among individuals concerning molt and bill color. This one has much yellow at the base of the bill. The grey back and the comparatively strong bill with yellow at base separate this species from Red-necked Phalarope in similar plumage - toward basic. |
