Male and female. The male is unmistakable, and the female as well if seen well. Female of Common Scoter looks superficially very similar, but since the two species normally do not use the same habitats, it shouldn't be a problem likely to occur. The dark back neck and top of the head in combination with the bright for neck, cheek and throat are characteristic. Seeking shelter from the strong southeastern wind together with many Tufted Ducks.
