Purple Sandpiper (Calidris maritima)    Sandpipers and Allies (Scolopacidae)
Sortgrå Ryle ~ Playero Oscuro ~ Skärsnäppa
Purple Sandpiper 3194    (19 photos)
2019-10-16    Kalvebod Fælled, Denmark

This dark-suited sandpiper superficially looks like a compressed Common Redshank. Association especially by the bare part coloration. Compared to other calidris species the dark expression is noticeable, and especially combined with choice of habitat. Rocky coastline, or likewise substitute habitat, as here, is normally only used by this species, and the Ruddy Turnstone which is also present with this small flock of 6.

The bird with the strong golden-buff fringes to the wing coverts, I would like for a juvenile, but apparently differences between juvenile and basic plumage are subtle, and varied, why it is probably necessary to id them to species level only.

3 birds present the same place along the dike as the group of 6 two days ago, 3194. Comparing the photos it looks like at least one bird is the same, picture 30 of today and picture 6 from 3194, expecting that they all are then.

The dike 100 meters north of Nordtårnet. A single bird looking rather apathetic. Perhaps soaking up the wonderful rays of afternoon sun, after days with strong easterly winds.

Dæmningen.
A small flock of four birds.
The pale-legged bird in front in photo 4 also shows duskier edges to the wing coverts why I think it could be a young bird, 2cy. It's also the one standing in photo 5 and flying in photo 6.
