2010-11-02 El Fuerte (sin), Mexico
Subspecies: rhodopnus Adult male. This subspecies looks extremely like Purple Finch which is found in North America, and only reaches Mexico during winter, and only on the Californian peninsula. A local guide I spoke to, identified them consequently as such. I wonder how come this subspecies should be treated as nothing more than that, taking into consideration that subspecies both to the north and south look normal. |

Subspecies: coccineus? Adult male. Unmistakable in this area. Third male that I got photos of before they took off again. Haven' seen them since on the wire. This one is a little paler than the other two. In general there are big variation to the extend of red on the males, but also to the tones of red. Coto La Condesa |

Subspecies: coccineus? Adult male. Unmistakable in this area. Other than 2817. First time I see the species on the wire. Normally they stay out in the vegetation in the field behind the house. Coto La Condesa |

Subspecies: coccineus? Adult male. Unmistakable in this area. A very common species, which you, however, has to make an effort to get close to. Often flies the moment you give it any kind of attention, just like crows and magpies back in Denmark. Coto La Condesa |
