Subspecies: indigotica 2cy male. Confusingly blackish color to the new breast feathers doesn't give associations toward this species when seeing the bird at first. The strong bill and the dark basic color are characteristic in comparison with similar species. |

Subspecies: indigotica (West Mexico) Male. The turquoise shoulder and front makes it pretty unique in the area, most likely confusion risk is with a breeding plumage Indigo Bunting. But while the latter looses its blue color in winter, the Blue Bunting stays blue all year and it is therefore mostly in spring, when the Indigo starts to acquire its blue color again that confusion is a risk. The females is another matter... |

Subspecies: indigotica (West Mexico) Female. The thick bill and the darker plumage is what to look for when separating this bird from the other bunting females. Varied is the most similar, whereas as Lazuli normally shows marked wing bars and Indigo faint streaks on the breast. |
