Great variety among the many different subspecies. Mostly among the males, though. And especially the central Mexican subspecies chapalensis is rather distinctive with a warmer rich yellow to the body and a darker yellowish/grayish band above the mask, that makes it look very much like a Belding's Yellowthroat, making me wonder if it wouldn't be reasonable to give it a similar species status.

Subspecies: chapalensis Adult male. This subspecies which is to be found at the western end of the volcanic belt, and a bit north of it, has a predominant yellow line above the black facial mask, which gives it a different expression than than the common ones with contrasting white. |

Subspecies: chapalensis ♂. Local bird. Three were song competing positioned in a 50 meters triangle. This subspecies has a more diffuse grayish front above the black mask and a richer yellow base color than northern subspecies. Actually the resemblance to Belding's Yellowthroat is striking, why it would be interesting to know why it hasn't received a similar species status. |
