Birds from Mexico have been suggested to pertain to a separate species, but due to clinal differences remains as one.
And being the only certhia species in the Americas identification is straightforward, though, as always, can still be difficult to spot. Mexican birds from the Central Volcanic area are generally dark bellied and have whitish streaks on the back compared to other subspecies. The species is closest to Short-toed Treecreeper in DNA and appearance, showing both a white alula edge, whitish throat contrasting with the darkish breast and belly, and probably the same distribution of primary tips on the folded wing. Plus the short hind claw. Apparently the tail of Brown is more obviously streaked; a character only faintly visible on both the European species. |
