First calendar year. Young bird because of the brownish non-glossy greater coverts and shape of white tip to median coverts. But probably also by unexperienced behavior, as seen in photos 5 and 6, where it swallows a complete acorn. Later, one of the other birders saw that it regurgitated it again. A lesson learned, probably. Extraordinary three birds have thrown their love on this garden patch in an urban environment, next to the railway station. Here they find acorns and probably hazel nuts and frequently fly off in direction of a nearby forest, perhaps to hide them safely for later consumption. Only one bird present when I visited. |
