As often first heard, and then provoked a little for a nice photo. Very Myiachus like always, but smaller and more compact. The pink delta spot on the lower mandible is unique, though, as is the pale eyebrow in front of the eye. Endemic |

Difficult bird to identify from the photos. At first glance it looks like a Dusky-capped Flycatcher, but when paying attention to the details the softly streaked breast and the paler lores become clear. Normally the pink triangle at the base of the lower mandible is diagnostic, but as it is seen on these photos it is not that obvious, and knowing that Dusky-capped Flycatcher also has a pale base to the lower mandible it could cause confusion. Compare for example with 3150 photo 5 to see how similar they look. This bird vocalized well and came out of the dense thorn forest in the same hesitant manner as it normally does, when provoking it with playback. Endemic |

A nice surprise to find this endemic flycatcher on the property. My first here. It called spontaneously, and was as slow to respond to playback as it mostly is. I found it, on the ridge behind the main house. The vegetation was very dry, still with no rain for the season, and up on the ridge the forest looked almost like a dry thorn forest. Good habitat for the species. So it probably moves in when the conditions are like this, because normally, during the birding season, it is not a species to be expected on the ranch. The species looks like a miniature myiarchus flycatcher but is different, both in having a very pink delta-shaped base to the lower mandible and a faintly streaked breast. Hearing the call is normally how you first become aware if its presence. A discrete but nice bird. Endemic |
