The very long primary projection confirms this species. See also 581 from same day. The two birds are different which you can tell by the different distances between the outer primaries. |

Marcelo Brongo helped with the id since I'm still not secure on the jizz and details to a confident degree. The alternatives were: Hammond, Pine(Empidonax affinis) and Dusky (Empidonax oberholseri) because of the narrow bill. Dusky is ruled out because of the long primary projection. Pine, except that it is not seen at this locality, only higher up the volcanoes, is ruled out because the lower mandible is too dark all the way to the base. Normally it is brighter orange but can show dark coloration, but then only the outer part. |

Typical call, sharper than the whip call heard from many of the other empidonax species. |

Classic Hammond's with grayish-greenish plumage and especially gray head with short, narrow and dark bill. The angle isn't neutral but the long primary projection and the short tail are appreciable. The most common empidonax in the park during the winter. Compare with Pine Flycatcher, pic. 2004. |

Strange light, but you still perceive the gray greenish tone of the plumage good for this species. Dusky is very similar but the long primary projection and the short dark bill are good for H. |
