Subspecies: plumbea Adult female. Scaly belly as the male but otherwise more discret colors without black on the head. Is distinguished from female Gambel's Quail by more brownish wing coverts, scaly belly and nape. Scaly Quail, which normally is not found in the area, reminds a lot of female California, but has the complete front and nape scaly. It also has a white top rather than black. |

Subspecies: plumbea Adult male. Unmistakable. Gambel's Quail male does not have scaly breast and has a darker brown belly patch. It also has a more bright red crown and black front. Mountain Quail among other things has broad white flank streaks and no black in the head, and also should be found at higher elevations - not close to sea level. |
