Subspecies: pygmaeus Female only with red nape. The birds on the island pertain to their own subspecies different from the birds on the continent - Yucatán. I'm not sure what separates them. |

Subspecies: rubricomus Male with red from nape to top of head. The yellow feathers around the bill distinguishes this species from Golden-fronted Woodpecker that is also present in Yucatán, in the red-bellied form. |

2013-11-26 Isla Cozumel, Mexico
Subspecies: pygmeus Male with almost complete red top and back head. See 1180. The yellow nasal-tufts separate it from the Golden-fronted Woodpecker which here in Yucatán has red ones. The lesser size is also obvious in the field, as is the dirtier basic color of the birds here on Cozumel. The voice is different too. More raspy. Yucatán 2013. |
