Subspecies: merrilli Reddish form. The long tail in picture 3 is diagnostic. But also the reddish mask around the eye bordered with white and the white line below the throat indicate this species. As do the broad white tips to the wing coverts and the bright border to the shoulder feathers. All 3 pictures show the same bird. Taken just before it got dark and after, with flash. |

Subspecies: yucatanensis Adult. Partner to 3096, sitting right next to it. Again the long tail combined with the black-checkered scapulars, the white-tipped coverts, the rufous cheek with the white moustache is good for the species. Were roosting in an isolated patch of trees next to the shore line. |

Subspecies: yucatanensis Adult. The long tail, the rufous cheek, the white moustache and the black-checkers on the back should make you think in direction of this species. With the big leaf covering the front of the bird, I'm sure I would never have found this bird if it wasn't because I saw where it landed! I probably wouldn't have found it no matter what, if I hadn't seen where it landed..! |
