Subspecies: sallaei Adult male. As with the other trogon species of the region the male has both upper and lower mandible pale. And here, yellow eye ring in combination with green-blue back, cotton-like wing-coverts and a tail pattern with fine black and white banding centrally on each feather and the tip broadly white. Characteristic voice and one of the species you hear throughout the day. |

Subspecies: sallaei Female with unique broken white eye ring. The cottony wing coverts are also characteristic for the species. |

Subspecies: sallaei Male. Have registered this bird as this species without doubt, so I'm pretty confident that I got it id'ed in the field (have no further details, nor remember well the obs.). But based on the photo alone, honestly, it might be difficult to argue why it isn't a Black-headed instead of. It even looks like the coverts have a plain-looking surface lacking the cotton-like impression of Gartered. However, I stick with this species, and the comment should merely be read as a warning, again again, about not to be too conclusive when dealing with a single photo that does not show unique characteristics. |
