Løvsanger ~ Mosquitero Musical ~ Lövsångare | |||||||||||||
Hide text
Relevant to Denmark, always more elongated and sharper looking than the sympatric chiffchaffs. The legs are dark red rather than black and the eye stripe darker too. The primary projection is long on Willow compared to Chiffchaff. The two breed in the same type habitat and areas, and is best id'ed during the summer by sound.

Subspecies: ? One of the few birds to be found among the far more common chiffchaffs migrating through Denmark in large numbers right now. They move erratically through the foliage making them difficult to see well and separate, but this birds shows what you expect to see on a Willow: A long primary projection, and contrasting color between feet and leg. Legs here being diagnostically paler than those of the chiffchaff. Not so obvious from these photos is that willow normally appears more greenish yellow than the chiffs, and often has a more elongated appearance. |

Subspecies: ? Pale looking bird in the strong sun light. Pale legs, long primary projection and long pale bill are good indications of the species. |

Dark red legs rather than black makes me say Willow over Chiffchaff, even though the primary projection appears to look short. But the angle might count for that. |

♂. Pumpehus-broen, Hejresøen. One of the willow warblers hanging out near the aberrant chiffchaff that is visiting now. Easy to recognize with the well-marked head pattern and long primary projection. The color of the legs is not as pale as can be. |

♀. Ellevehøjvej. Call. This bird was calling in a strange way, that caught my attention; probably aided by the many deviating chiffchaffs that I'm working on these days. The flimsy call, is not something I've heard before, and it took a while before I got a hold of the bird, understanding that it was the female of a willow pair that was whimsying about collecting nest material. The male was there too; the one singing close by on the recording. A few normal hu-it calls, hockey-stick-shaped, are thrown in, most clearly at 33 sec and 44.5 sec. Otherwise it uses the other call characterized by a short descend, a long steep ascend, a medium descend, and at times ending in a very short ascend. Though I haven't heard this before, I don't expect it to be uncommon. It is more likely me who haven't paid attention to such a detail before now. Irrelevant passages have been removed from the recording. Also: willow warbler, common chiffchaff. |
