2021-11-06 Melby Overdrev, Denmark
First calendar year. When this bird came by, it instantly looked smaller and darker than the Razorbills and Common Murres that were passing by in larger numbers. The dusky head party in combination with the darker underwing and the broad based bill with pointed tip is what stand out. Also the complete breast band is unique for the puffin. Probably a young bird with the small bill. In photo 2 the head looks rather pale but it's an artefact. More birds than usual have been seen in Danish waters this autumn, which could be incidental or perhaps related to difficulties with food finding - greedy humans and climatic punishment. Rare |
