Apparently birds that winter in Denmark are solely of the robusta subspecies, whereas the Scandinavian birds winter from the Mediterranean region and south. I would like to think that it is not as black and white, and less so with warmer climate inviting many migrants to winter closer to their breeding grounds than before.

Subspecies: totanus Juvenile. Local juvenile with the neat regular plumage. The warm tones and the pale reddish legs separate it from common migrant Wood Sandpiper which is normally cold gray, finer build and has greenish legs. Very rare Lesser Yellowlegs is probably the biggest confusion possibility but with prolonged views the also cold gray basic tone and the more stilt like stance plus always more yellowish legs should lead you in the right direction. The bump on the upper bill looks like an abnormality. |

Subspecies: [robusta] Apparently birds that winter in Denmark are solely of the robusta subspecies, whereas the Scandinavian birds winter from the Mediterranean region and south. I would like to think that it is not as black and white, and less so with warmer climate inviting many migrants to winter closer to their breeding grounds than before. These birds do look large and dark cold grayish which is characteristic of robusta, and since the local birds seem to have disappeared some weeks ago, I admit that they probably are of this subspecies. |

The cold gray tone of the plumage indicates robusta birds. |

A larger flock during a wet and warm February. They are supposed to be of the North Atlantic subspecies robusta, but I'm still not sure how totatnus birds look at this time of year, and taking the mild weather I can't see why there shouldn't be totanus birds wintering in Denmark. With Mallards. |

Not sure, but I met two birders who said someone had seen purple sandpipers along the coast, and just wondering if some of these redshanks could have been mistaken for the sandpipers if only seen sticking the head above the edge of the rock. It was high tide and not favorable for sandpipers anywhere along the beach except on the seagrass banks. Of course they could be foraging there, but I like the mistake-theory better simply because it is exactly how you are expecting to see this species, on beach and water rocks. |

Adult. Wet grass field by Gåsebyen. There have been several present during the winter, but this looks more like birds ready for spring activities. |

Adult. Villahøj. Part of a breeding pair it seemed; being very disturbed by my presence - even on the road, where one would expect to be accepted as a bypasser! |

Gåsebyen. Roosting on the land side when the sea level is too high I think. |
