West Mexican Chachalaca (Ortalis poliocephala) Sierra Madre-Chachalaca ~ Chachalaca Pálida |
Subspecies | monotypic |
Locality | El Salto (col), Mexico |
Date | 2012-03-18 |
Sex, Age, Comment | Only chachalaca in the area. Rufous-bellied, north of Puerto Vallarta, has the belly and vent very rufous. The two species interbreed in the overlap zone. The rather strong color on the rear flank could indicate that this bird has some Rufous-bellied genes in it. It would be interesting to learn how much the pure birds can deviate from the traditional description of the two species. Also see 1197. |
