Adult female. Teal females are more difficult to identify than males, but the small size separates it from most other dabbling ducks except for Garganey. But normally Garganey female has an all dark bill and has strong line markings in the face, resembling Ruddy Duck, and apparently it lacks the white mark on the side of the rump that the teal has. Seen here as a thin patch at the base of the tail. The pale orange on the bill of the teal is normally restricted to the side and the base. Flying birds show different banding around the speculum. Was matched with male on 3339. |
