Juvenile. As seen here unmistakable in Denmark with the dark eye patch and modest mustache emphasized in head with both a pale cheek and crown. A young Eurasian Hobby would be much darker in the head with the dark extending down the nape, and the belly streaking would be equally heavier. An unexpected Amur Falcon is very similar in juvenile plumage but normally shows a darker crown combining with the dark eye patch, and also generally shows a whiter ground color to the belly. As the photos show this character is changeable depending on light and angle. Photo 1 shows the correct difference in back color between Red-footed Falcon and Eurasian Kestrel. A good influx of young birds in Denmark these days with warm eastern winds. |
