♂. A pale frosty bird without apparent undertail markings and restricted red cap - all good for Hoary Redpoll [Hvidsisken]. But the large bill indicates that it is a flammea at the pale end of the scale. The dark center of the undertail feather can easily be covered by the other feathers, or the feather could have been shed - it looks like there is a molt limit in the wing and taking the limited red on the breast it is probably a young male. My only caveat about the bill is that it somehow looks like there is a molt going on around the base of it, why the bill might look smaller under full-plumage conditions, and the bird therefore indeed could be a Hoary. |
