Sex, Age, Comment | Adult molting. On these photos you can only see a part of the white tail edge characteristic for the species, but live it was pretty obvious. Notice how it shows a similar white 'mouth' as does the Cassin's, though it is not as marked as it is seen on that species. Also notice the pale tips to the tail which could indicate Cassin's too, but the paleness is not strong enough for that species. Short bill is also a good indication of this species. And lastly, the simple fact that the bird was sitting on my wire is a clear indication of it being something different, because though there are various local Cassin's constantly around the house, I've never seen them perch on the wires. Several Westerns showed up this day, but in the moment of writing, the 10th, they have all gone again, headed south toward their wintering sites further south. Normally you don't see the species in Jalisco in winter, why you have to find them while they migrate through. | ||||||||||||
