Adult. First the blackbirds started to make a spectacle, then the jay joined them, and I expected something like this but couldn't see any silhouettes shaped like an owl. And at the same time I had half an eye and ear on two short-toed treecreepers that were my first this year, but knew it was smarter to concentrate on a potential owl, hoping that it would finally be me finding a Boreal Owl...so many years since we saw one the last time. Eventually when I got close to the spot where the noise-makers were hanging out they left, but I couldn't see anything at first. As it often is with Long-eared Owl you have to have the right angle to the bird before it becomes visible, and then I saw it. Glued to the trunk of a tiny fir, it sat half hidden between the branches only allowing these photos (without approaching too aggressively). And what I saw definitely made me think it was a long-eared. The way it was sitting and the vertical streaks that were visible between the branches gave me this first association. Only that I was a bit confused by the chunky shape. But home, checking the books, there is no doubt that it is actually a somewhat misplaced Tawny Owl! The round short wings falling short of the tail tip give it away. Such an observations of course makes your wonder have many else there are, sitting in all the other much more suited trees...klsv |
