First calendar year. Royal Golf. Seen with a small flock of Barnacle and Graylag geese. At first I took it for a hybrid something, but investigating, I can now only see it as a first year Greater White-fronted. The bill color and shape plus the blackish tint along the base of the bill is very good for the species. The tail pattern is also good with only a narrow white margin to the the feathers. The back looks perhaps too uniform for a pure first year bird, but I guess the pale margins have been worn off for the most part. According to Svensson (Collins Bird Guide) it is probably a nominate albifrons rather than a flavirostris from Greenland. This, based on the paler ground color and particular the pale belly plus the pinkish bill, which is more orange on the Greenland birds. |
