Apparently birds that winter in Denmark are solely of the robusta subspecies, whereas the Scandinavian birds winter from the Mediterranean region and south. I would like to think that it is not as black and white, and less so with warmer climate inviting many migrants to winter closer to their breeding grounds than before. These birds do look large and dark cold grayish which is characteristic of robusta, and since the local birds seem to have disappeared some weeks ago, I admit that they probably are of this subspecies. |
