In fresh plumage. The most common pipit in Denmark, both breeding and migrating. The bland face expression, the rather well-marked streaks on the back and the breast plus the pale pink legs are good indications of this species. It looks overall similar to Tree Pipit but Meadow has a more bland expression in the face and always shows broader and more diffuse streaks to the rear flank. Tree Pipit normally also has a warmer base color to the breast and in general looks 'sharper'. During migration, while foraging, the Meadow Pipits are mostly found in the open low grassy fields throughout the area, but sometimes they also visit the seaside rocks as seen here, thus, acting similar to the Rock Pipits that also migrate through or winters here. These two, however, are very different in plumage and overall expression. The Rock Pipit, in winter, always shows a dusty green cast to the plumage and is in general a less well-marked bird in all aspects. Especially the breast and flank streaking is very diffuse. Rock is larger and more elongated with darker bill and legs, and in general is always found in this type of habit. |
