Adult. Pictures 5 and 6 were taken separately from the others, when this bird came back from the direction where the other one had gone. It looks like the tail could be similar on the two birds, why I tentatively regard them as one. Best identification mark for this bird is the white upper tail coverts, plus a second white tail band, best seen from above. Because, what is normally mentioned as field marks for this species doesn't seem to be very clear on this bird: Parallel-sided wings - not really, long legs well past the white tail band - depends on the angle and don't really look that long, black and white streaked thighs - not really visible here, lack of whitish patch on outer primaries below - yes! Also try to compare this bird with 2955 which is a 100% sure Common Black Hawk, and tell me if you couldn't be confused by the silhouette and leg length the two between. Be aware, don't string it! |
