Sex, Age, Comment | A larger flock of dowitchers down on the coast will always make me say short-billed to start with, but since the two species in basic plumage apparently can overlap completely, I decide to leave them as sp., unless the field marks are completely clear. The birds standing, to me, all look like short-billed, weak breast contrast and on the right bird not so lumped back, but the bird landing has very strong contrast between the throat and the breast and appears to have well-defined flank bars, which indicate a long-billed. However, the bright tail is more in favor of a short-billed. Also two Least Sandpipers in the foreground. | ||||||||||||
