Sex, Age, Comment | Adult female. Seen from a distance it looks like the nasal tufts are of a different color than the red nape. They could look yellowish, and therefore fool someone to believe that the bird is a Yucatan Woodpecker. But seen closer, see 1184, it is obvious that they are indeed soft red. The bird is probably also of too large proportions be a Yucatán Woodpecker. The extent of red on the head also fits a female Golden-fronted better. Female Yucatan only has a small patch on the lower nape, and the male has red almost reaching the front above the bill, like male of Golden-fronted. At closer range it is obvious that the nasal tufts are reddish and not yellowish, which excludes a Yucatan Woodpecker. | ||||||||||||
