222 (1 photos) Mark and Lori at the bat cave 2013-11-28 Bat cave, Calakmul, Cam, Mexico
Mark and Lori waiting for the bats to come out. The entrance to the cave was at the bottom of a 50 meters deep dry cenote. When they came out, they started flying around inside the cenote, but later when they should be counted in their thousands, they started to move out and up and flew around silently between the trees and us.It is estimated that more than 2 million bats live in the cave, perhaps up till 6-7 millions. 9 different species have been identified until now. The cave stretches at least some 700 meters under ground, and contains permanent water basins where fish and other animals live. Fascinating. Yucat

The Goddess Tzapotlatena. As a symbol of the immensely big role the corn plant has always played to the indigenous and present people of this region, she represents the power that make the plant grow and by providing food to the people, to make societies grow and prosper. She is also the Goddess of curation and birth. According to the legends she invented a solution based on resin from pine trees, which was used to treated various diseases.
Obviously she caught my eyes first of all because of her beautifully protruding breasts. And practically being the first human construction you see when you arrive in Ciudad Guzmán

Except from coming to see the turtles, the visitors, for the most part, also go for a boat ride on the estuary. It is a nice trip of about 30-45 minutes and includes visits to a heronry and sailing through the dense mangrove bordering the lagoon.

Arrival at the pier after a trip around the estuary. Remember that morning and aftenoon are the best hours to do the trip. Both to avoid the midday heat, but also because the animals and other living creatures are more active at these hours.

Visitors arrive all through the year, though most of them visit during the cooler winter period. Until now I have only seen Mexican visitors. Actually a bit rare since Manzanillo still attracts foreign tourists. But perhaps mostly sports fishers and other watersport enthusiast.

The many Mexican visitors apparently arrive from all over Mexico. That's a standard question from Von to all the them, and the answers indicate that at least among the mexicans the place is well-known.
