Imago. Male. SHV-svenskesø. Left wings dorsal view, Fw 31mm Hw 29,5mm. Measured from the fixation point along the costa (leading edge) to the tip of wing.
The yellow tint is how most striolatum normally look at this time of the season, though probably exaggerated here because the photos were taken a day after finding the animal, knowing that dead animals normally loose their colors and darken.

When I saw this animals the tail looked bluish, and I was almost sensing Orthetrum vibes. But closer up it was a darter, and I think the substance on wings and the last abdominal segments might be slime from a snail or other type of insect/animal.

Only animals here this year. Was connected to a female sanguineum at first, but they split up, and she continued to lay eggs alone.

Photo documentation mainly to show how difficult it can be to perceive the species characters if seen from the wrong angle.

My first thought was that the lost appendages, or very short ones, was the result of an accident or a fight, rather than an innate anomality, but finding another female in the exact same spot, 4 days later, I'm not so sure about that anymore. The other: 3387.

Was lying on the ground with the wings spread out, and I thought it was dead. But it came to live when i grabbed its wing, and it was very excited while being photographed. When done, I put it on my saddle to let it fly, as it pleased, but it just tumbled to the ground, almost, and landed in the grass next to the trail. Later it took off into the thicket.

Looking at its damaged face, I suspect it must have collided with a box-bicycle or something similarly heavy, large and fast, and was still groggy when I found it.

There was no need to catch this one, except for trying, and adding a handson to the collection. In air they are practically impossible to catch, but this one was perched in the grass, and then it was another matter.

As with one of the fonscolumbii darters of today being damaged, when I saw the broken leg of this mixta, I thought it was me, but there was nothing in the net, why I have to conclude, that the life of a dragonfly is simply a tough game!

My first and only barbarus this year. Very likely a visitor from outside, having nothing to do with the influx last year. I visited both places today, where I had them last year, just in case, but it was as dead as it has been all year.

The blurred layer cake pattern on the yellow patch behind the eyes looks funny, but apparently is a trait of the old individuals.

Imago. Male & Female. Vandhullet. Egg-laying.
I had seem them flying around earlier, but lost them. Then after a while, I could hear the wing-rustle, but it took a long time before I was able to spot them. Almost levelled out with the dry grass, and also: The male was struggling to get both of them free, but the female was trapped under a single straw of grass, and as long as he resisted of letting her go, nothing would happen. He finally did, when I came too close with the Cycloptical Canon Eye. The female stayed put for a while, as if trying to get a hold of herself before flying away or after the male, why I could easily grab her, and get the photos seen in 3374.

After I put her down, she took off, and the male was instantly over her again. Obviously they weren't finished, and later I flushed them again, but this time now only as a mating wheel. They flew far away this time when that happened...

Imago. Female. Vandhullet. Blue form.
My first blue female. Flushed from the fringe of sedges along the now dried-out waterhole. Just sunning or trying to lay eggs, I can't say for sure. It landed here in this low willow bush, and when I approached too closely with my wideangle lens, it took seriously off - far away over the tall trees nearby. Later I found a male sunning itself in the same sedges.

Imago. Male. Not enough time, and not the right photo gear to record this animal properly. My first juncea ever. The animal behaved very approachable while sitting on the trunk, and under normal circumstances a perfect portrait of this new species would have been the result. But I had to do with my wideangle lens and a camera body that has reached the point where it only fires occasionally. Luckily it did here, but too far from the the subject to be really good. The two photos shows different trunks, but I think it is the same animal.

I had 5 aeshna species here today; cyanea, mixta, grandis, juncea and subarctica.

The only aeshna-species in our region that occasionally drops eggs in tandem. And apparently the moist solid mud is the favorite substrate.

They were quite persistent, keeping together both when I, or one of the single males, disturbed them. 15 minutes+ and they were still at it, when I left.
