Skråstregbredpande (Thymelicus sylvestris)    Poda (1761)
   Bredpander (Hesperiidae) [Sommerfugle]    SMSK    24907
Small Skipper (gb)   Dorada Línea Larga (es)   Större Tåtelsmygare (se)
Measurements:
WS: 23-28mm
Generations:
1
Flight period:
JFMAMJJASOND
DK
Identification:
Sexes similar, except that males have scent-scales on the forewing upperside, presented as a black line running from the center toward the basis of the wing. And compared to Stregbredpande (T. lineola) this line is longer and wider almost reaching the margin of the wing near the basis.

Other characters to separate it from the very similar Stregbredpande is the underside of the antennas which on Stregbredpande are black to dark and orange to dusky on Skråstregbredpande. This with a few rare exceptions.
Also, Skråstregbredpande looks brighter and is bigger when the two are seen together. And along the inner margin of the underside of the hindwing it shows and orange line running along the entire length of the wing and contrast to the rest of the wing that is normally grayish. This is often the best way to separate females of the two, if the antenna color can't be determined.

In Denmark not likely to be confused with other species, since the other two orange skippers show various degrees of paler spots on the wings.

Life stages:
Distribution:
NW Africa, Europe, Turkey, Middle East, Iran, Caucasus and S Urals.
Habitat:
Flower-rich meadows, more moist than where Stregbredpande (Thymelicus lineola) [Essex Skipper ~ Dorada Puntas Negras ~ Mindre Tåtelsmygare] prefers to fly, but there is overlap, where they fly together.
Behavior:
Much like Stregbredpande (T. lineola)
Host plants:
Eng-Rottehale (Phleum pratense) [Timothy ~ Timotej]
Blåtop (Molinia caerulea) [Purple Moor-Grass ~ Molinia ~ Blåtåtel]
Fløjlsgræs (Holcus lanatus) [Meadow Soft Grass ~ Luddtåtel]
Endemic:
Status
In Denmark common west of Storebælt (Jylland, Fyn). Absent otherwise. Very few reliable observations have been made on Sjælland east of Storebælt. However, perhaps still an indication of a slow expansion across Storebælt.

Bogs near Skørping. A good handful present.

Lifer! Grayer fringes than on Essex Skipper [Stregbredpande] and the orange line along the inner margin of the hindwing below and the orange-tipped clubs. The long scent line on the upper forewing of the male is also an indication of the species.

On Field Scabious [Blåhat] with Spotted Longhorn [Sortsømmet Blomsterbuk].

With the orange tip to the antenna club I have to call it a silvestris, though it is only from the photos that I claim it. In the field I took all the small skippers fore lineola [Stregbredpande], but without paying much attention to them; in my search for the super elusive niobe [Klitperlemorsommerfugl].

Did indeed look small when flying around. Brown underside to the clubtip compared to dark on lineola [Stregbredpande]. A good handful seen, but only casually while focusing on the main dragonfly-targets this day.
