Life stages:
Mating takes place near the shore on the ground or in vegetation. It lasts a few minutes. The solo female flies forth and back then drops the eggs into the water where many water plants. The eggs hatch after a few weeks and the larvae live in-between the water plants and develop during 2-3 years. The imago-transformation takes place near the water.

Status
General decline in Europe perhaps also reflects the status in Denmark.
Comment:
April, 2025: Starting to fly in Denmark on April 24 in 2025 and the last week of April during the previous 3 years, why I've expanded the start of the SE and EU-n flight periods to the end of April.

Imago Male
The only one confirmed today, I think. All the whitefaces were actively harassing each other, making it difficult to hold track of them.

Imago Male
An early emergence, and my first April imago. It appeared to come straight out of the water, when the sun came out, and flew directly to this position 6-7 meters up in a beech. It's difficult to see the appendages well enough, I think, to call it a male without hesitation, though they do seem to be closer to each other than seen on the female. But apart from this the male secondary genitals are visible in photo 2 confirming the sex.

Imago Male & Female
Mating wheel and a single female. Don't remember if it was the same female, but likely so, since the photos were taken in the same spot.
