Life stages:
The mating takes place near the water, in bushes and trees, and lasts only about 10 minutes. The solo and flying female then drops the eggs into the water by dipping. The eggs hatch after 2-4 weeks. The larvae live buried in the bottom material and hunts mostly at night. They develop during 2-4 years. The imago-transformation takes place near the water on sun-exposed plants up to a good meter above the ground. The species is known for its mass-emergences within a few suitable days.
Distribution:
Most of Europe; absent most of Iberian peninsula, most of British isles, most of Norway and northern Scandinavian peninsula plus the Mediterranean islands. Also present Ukraine and Russia east to Kazakhstan. In Denmark localized to CE Jylland and C and NE Sjælland.

LC(global) LC(eu) LC(EU) LC(dk). In Denmark stable and spreading to older known localities. Main localities, Gudenåen in Jylland and Susåen on Sjælland. Also stable in the rest of the Nordic region and perhaps even spreading north in Sweden. Better water quality is a part of reason.

Strange that the lower appendage is not visible from this angle. Or does its appearance depend on maturity..? The yellow knobs on the side of S2 indicate that it is a male.

Another thing is the small black paired dots on top of S5-8. Are they common for the species? None of my field guides mention anything about this detail.

Mature. Only a few animals present on a windy day, but in general there have only been reported few emerging animals from this locality until now. The species develop during 2-4 years, why this year probably is a year in-between breedings.

They were emerging vastly this day along a short 100 meters stretch right in front of the boarding school Herlufsholm where the pupils are bullied and the teachers just laugh about it. Almost. Perhaps it was an 80 meters stretch...
