Sexes are alike when it comes to colors and patterns.

The mating takes place near the water, and the solo female then inserts the eggs into dead plant material near the surface. The eggs hatch after a few months (unique among Danish hawkers). The larvae live in-between water plants and develop during 2-3 years. The imago-transformation takes place near the water, up to 30-50 cm above the ground.
Distribution:
Most of Europe; absent C Iberian peninsula, most of British Isles and Fennoscandinavia except S Sweden. Also N Africa. Also present in Russia and adjacent countries to C Asia. In Denmark mainly present in the eastern part of the country but slowly expanding toward the west.

Status
After a decrease through the last part of the last century the species is gaining momentum again having become more or less common in the eastern part of the country. But it is spreading westward to Jylland, where now seen regularly in many parts, though still in singular numbers as of 2025. Reached Hjørring in 2025.
Has not been seen: Rømø, Anholt, Endelave, as well as most smaller islands.
- Has been spotted in Finland in 2024 for the first time supporting that a northbound expansion is indeed a fact.
