Life stages:
The mating takes place after a ritual where the male flies flashily around the female and also shows off his white tibias while perched. The mating lasts some 15-60 minutes. The female, in tandem, inserts eggs into submerged plants, herself staying above the water. The eggs hatch in a few weeks and the larvae live in-between water plants or plant debris at the bottom, and develop during 1-2 years. The imago-transformation takes place on plants low or high and near the water, or up to several meters from it.
Distribution:
Most of Europe; absent from Iberian peninsula and northern part of the Scandinavian peninsula; present south England and Wales. Eastward through Russia and Middle East to C Siberia. In Denmark only found at two sites in C and S Jylland and one on Sjælland.

Behavior:
Host plants:
Gul Åkande (Nuphar)
Vandaks (Potomogeton)
Hornblad (Ceratophyllum)
and other plants including dead plant material.

Status
Very local in Denmark but probably stable. Two well-known populations in Jylland: Jels (Vejen) and Slåensø (Silkborg). The population on Sjælland, Tamosen (Sorø), was re-discovered in 2005, and in combination with cleaner waterways the species might be expanding. In fact, there are records from two other sites in Jylland, Sønderskov (Hedensted) and Spørring (Aarhus) listed in arter.dk, and one from Bidstrup-skovene on Sjælland (Ringsted). But coming from "Danmarks Miljøportals Naturdatabase" the records, as always, hold no information that could confirm the observations (I mean, just because you work as a general biologist, it doesn't mean you know anything about dragonflies. Yes, it irritates me, when authorities hide information from the public, especially when we are talking about new sites for rare species. Bad!). Rather common in neighboring countries.

Not sure, but I suspect this is the same animal seen from different sides.

Young. The first reported this year from here. Only two seen, but late in the day and with a chilly northern wind making conditions difficult.
