Male. Male with the blue iriscent shine. Notice the absence of the red-encircled black spot on the forewing which is always present on the Lesser Purple Emperor (Apatura ilia).
Not sure about sex. Here the distal ventral wing clearly shows the white pin in the center of the white band crossing the wing. This distinguishes the present species from the Lesser Purple Emperor which recently has been discovered as a new species in Denmark here at the same location. The good butterfly people have brought along pieces of rope bathed in sugar added red wine to attract the Apatura butterflies. Freshly baked faeces is another delicacy among these winged creatures...
Male. Pinseskoven (Birch-forest). With iridescent blue on the upper wing this is a male.
Easily separated from Lesser Purple Emperor (Apatura ilia), also present in the forest, by the limited yellow to the tips of the antennas, and by lack of an eye spot on the front wing.
