Apparently a male due to the small size. A new butterfly species discovered in Denmark last year, at this very location. Was firstly identified as a Purple Emperor (Apatura iris). It is smaller than this and of course still very rare. From below it does not show the white pin sticking out from the white band crossing the back wing which is characteristic of the Purple Emperor.

Apparently a male because of the small size. The upper front wing shows a black spot surrounded by a red circle - a characteristic separating this species from the Purple Emperor. Though the latter sometimes shows a similar pattern, but always in a more diffuse edition, almost without the red circle. This animal is another than 201.

Male. Pinseskoven.
Still hanging in, 9 years after it was first found here. The only individual I got to see this year.

Imago. Male. Usual spot in Pinseskoven - the Ilia-Boulevard!

Only sat there for a short while, perhaps disturbed by me, or restless because of the approaching rain. My first this year. Without ropes and other tricks.

Imago. Male. Pinseskoven.

A worn male that was happy to forage on horse maneuver; also the almost dried-out pile that I put there a few days ago.

Imago. Male. Pinseskoven, the back trail.

Attracted by scents of red wine, being spread on various trees by more sophisticated butterfly people than me. It definitely works.
Happy Birding
