. Very local in Denmark, a small population on the island Amager, southern edge of Copenhagen. Apparently stable. Was discovered in 2012. Rare in Sweden and scarce in southern Finland.
Comment:
Flies together with Purple Emperor on Amager in the birch forest Pinseskoven. The first animal was id'ed wrongly as a Purple. Naturally, with only the latter being known to be present in Denmark.

Pinseskoven.
Apparently a male due to the small size. A new butterfly species discovered in Denmark last year, at this very location. Was first identified as a Purple Emperor (Apatura iris). It is smaller than this and of course still very rare. From below it does not show the white pin sticking out from the white band crossing the hindwing which is a characteristic of iris.

Pinseskoven.
Apparently a male because of the small size. The upperside of the forewing shows a black spot surrounded by a red circle - a characteristic separating this species from iris. Though the latter sometimes shows a similar pattern, but always in a more diffuse version, almost without the red circle. This animal is another than 201.

Bagstien.
Nice comparison with the larger Purple Emperor on the right. Yesterday only purples were sitting here, but apparently both species like this sapsucking hotspot!

Only saw it as this in the folded state, but sitting at this natural spot (not attracted by sugar-wine splashing) that apparently was leaking juices since I had a Purple Emperor and a Comma Butterfly sitting here the day before.

Pinseskoven.
Still hanging in, 9 years after it was first found here. The only individual I got to see this year.

Ilia-boulevarden, Pinseskoven.
Only sat there for a short while, perhaps disturbed by me, or restless because of the approaching rain. My first this year. Without ropes and other tricks.

Pinseskoven.
A worn male that was happy to forage on horse maneuver; also the almost dried-out pile that I put there a few days ago.

Pinseskoven, the back trail.
Attracted by scents of red wine, being spread on various trees by more sophisticated butterfly people than me. It definitely works.

Sitting naturally on the ground licking minerals. Two animals seen today.
