Status:
Very local in Denmark, a small population on the island Amager, southern edge of Copenhagen. Apparently stable. Was discovered in 2012. Rare in Sweden and scarce in southern Finland.
Comment:
Flies together with Purple Emperor on Amager in the birch forest Pinseskoven. The first animal was id'ed wrongly as a Purple. Naturally, with only the latter being known to be present in Denmark.

2012-07-24 Kalvebod Fælled, Denmark Pinseskoven. Apparently a male due to the small size. A new butterfly species discovered in Denmark last year, at this very location. Was first identified as a Purple Emperor (Apatura iris). It is smaller than this and of course still very rare. From below it does not show the white pin sticking out from the white band crossing the hindwing which is characteristic of the Purple Emperor. |

2012-07-24 Kalvebod Fælled, Denmark Pinseskoven. Apparently a male because of the small size. The upper front wing shows a black spot surrounded by a red circle - a characteristic separating this species from the Purple Emperor. Though the latter sometimes shows a similar pattern, but always in a more diffuse edition, almost without the red circle. This animal is another than 201. |
